Clinical Manifestations

If you consumed alcohol during your pregnancy & are concerned that your baby may have Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, some signs and symptoms to watch for that are often seen in FAS babies include:

  • Abnormal facial features
    • Narrow, small eyes with epicanthal folds
    • Small head circumference
    • Small upper jaw
    • Smooth groove in upper lip
    • Smooth and thin upper lip
    • Short, upturned nose
  • Deformities of joints, limbs, and fingers
  • Growth problems (both in and out of the womb)
  • Vision difficulties 
  • Hearing problems
  • Abnormal behavior, such as short attention span, hyperactivity, poor impulse control, or extreme nervousness and anxiety
  • Delayed development in the areas of thinking, speech, movement, and social skills
  • Decreased muscle tone
  • Poor coordination
  • Learning disabilities
  • Heart defects
  • Mental retardation
  • Premature birth
  • Miscarriage
  • Infant death
